Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry (Egyptian Foreign Ministry)

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called on Saturday for intensified international solidarity to seriously and decisively face terrorism, saying the world is now facing growing threats of cross-border terrorism. Speaking at Bahrain’s annual Manama Dialogue conference, Shourky said terrorism works to fragment societies and destroy the concepts of the state, in favor of promoting ideas that provoke hatred and self-destruction. He stressed that terrorism is one of the challenges the world faces along with the global challenges of climate change, the coronavirus pandemic, irregular migration, cyber and digital security, artificial intelligence, genetic modifications, space security and others. “Today’s challenges are radically different from those of the past. They are not restricted by borders and are highly complex,” he said, adding that there is an international recognition of the need to develop the multilateral international and regional action frameworks. The FM affirmed that the success or failure of multilateral action in facing the aforementioned challenges will have a direct impact on regional security in all regions of the world. Facing those challenges depends on the political will of members of the international community to endorse the values of justice and cooperation, according to Shoukry. He also said there is a need for adopting new issues, topics, and priorities in the international agenda, along with the current ones, to address the “emerging and unconventional challenges,” such as the conflicts on natural resources, immigration issues, unemployment, and giving more space for the youth generation to take part in the international decisions.
