Calls for Int’l National Intervention as Houthis Commit More Crimes in Marib
Arab World
Riyadh, Aden – Abdulhadi Habtor and Asharq Al-AwsatThe Iran-backed Houthi militias are persisting on their offensive in the Yemeni province of Marib in spite of international calls for calm. The Houthis continue to commit more crimes against innocent civilians in Marib and other Yemeni provinces. The latest of these crimes was an attack with two ballistic missiles on a mosque in the al-Joubah region on Sunday. Some 40 people, including women and children, were killed in the attack. The Houthis’ intense missile and drone attacks on al-Joubah have forced the displacement of thousands of civilians towards Marib city amid a severe humanitarian crisis. Foreign Minister Ahmed bin Awad bin Mubarak held telephone talks on Monday with United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, David Gressly on the humanitarian situation in Marib, said official sources. The minister called on the UN and its various agencies to continue their humanitarian role away from Houthi pressure. He urged them against allowing the Houthis to exploit their work to cover up their crimes against humanity. Moreover, he called for more aid given the rising number of displaced. Over 50,000 people have been displaced in southern regions of Marib in the last two months alone. Meanwhile, 20 civil society groups condemned the Houthi violations in al-Joubah that have been met with international silence, which they denounced. In a joint statement they accused the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilians and their homes. Such acts are condemned by International Humanitarian Law and are deemed war crimes that should be more than just denounced by the UN, its experts and organizations. Such acts demand more than just words in order to protect innocent civilians and rein in the Houthis, they urged. The organizations lamented the silence of international rights groups over the ongoing Houthi crimes that are only escalating at a frightful rate every day. They called on regional and international rights and humanitarian partners to turn to the province and carrying out their moral and humanitarian duties in protecting civilians and the displaced from the hostile Houthi attacks.
