Yemen Slams Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia, Warns of Missing Opportunity for Peace

The Yemeni government on Friday condemned the recent attacks launched by Iran-backed Houthi militias against civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia, saying it reflect their rejection of peace efforts. “The latest Houthi attacks on installations, including oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, confirm their determination to continue its war,” a statement issued by the Yemeni Foreign Ministry said. The ministry affirmed Yemen’s solidarity “as a government and people with the Kingdom to counter these terrorist attacks” and Yemen’s support to all measures that Saudi Arabia takes to protect its lands and preserve its security and stability. “These militias continue their terrorist acts and undermine the security of the region without any international deterrence,” the statement said, calling on the international community to “assume its responsibility in putting an end to the militias’ irresponsible acts.” Meanwhile, Yemen’s Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani said the Houthi attacks confirm the militias won’t comply with the demands of peace unless they come under political and military pressure and unless they are subjected to international sanctions and their leaders are prosecuted as war criminals. In a statement to the Saba news agency, Eryani said the international community needs to stop the destructive Iranian policies that undermine the possibility of a peaceful solution in Yemen. He called on the international community to take its responsibility in “countering the Houthi terrorist activities and protecting regional and global peace.” On Friday, Houthis mobilized thousands of their supporters in Sanaa and other cities in response to a call by their leader, Abdulmalik al-Houthi. Al-Houthi is trying to show his military capacities amid doubts on whether he would accept the new Saudi initiative to end the conflict in Yemen and abandon Iran’s expansionist agenda in the region.
