Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, held a series of telephone talks on Monday with Arab leaders to discuss Saudi Arabia’s recently launched Green Middle East Initiative. The Crown Prince had declared the Green Middle East and Saudi Green Initiatives on Saturday. They aim to chart a path for Saudi Arabia and the region in protecting the planet, by clearly defining an ambitious road map that rallies the region and significantly contributes to achieving global targets in confronting climate change. On Monday, Crown Prince Mohammed discussed the Green Middle East Initiative with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of Eritrea Isaias Afwerki and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. The leaders welcomed the Saudi initiative, expressing their readiness to cooperate with the Kingdom to help it achieve its goals. Egypt has welcomed both initiatives, with its Environment Ministry saying they reflect the Kingdom’s keenness on preserving the environment and combating climate change. It said it was looking forward to working with Riyadh to ensure the success of the plans. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the initiatives demonstrate Saudi Arabia’s awareness of climate change and its commitment to sustainable development goals. They also show its keenness on playing a pioneering role in international affairs. The initiatives are a follow up of its presidency of the G20 in 2020, he added, remarking that the goals outlined in the initiatives are major priorities in the global agenda. Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Dr. Nayef al-Hajraf said Saudi Arabia’s initiatives will help achieve several climate goals, such as reducing carbon emissions and combating pollution. Organization of Islamic Cooperation Secretary-General Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen said the initiatives underscore Saudi Arabia’s pioneering role and responsibility in protecting the earth and environment and improving quality of life in the region.
