Cairo - Asharq Al-Awsat
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi discussed with his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades boosting bilateral ties. This came during a phone call the president received on Thursday night from Anastasiades, said Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Radi. The two presidents discussed means of bolstering the close bilateral relations along with coordination of stances over a number of security and regional issues, including developments in the eastern Mediterranean, added the spokesman. Sisi asserted that Egypt was keen on all aspects of constructive cooperation with Cyprus, especially in view of the development and strength in the two countries' relations over the past period or within the framework of a three-way mechanism of cooperation group that includes Egypt, Cyprus and Greece. The president lauded this mechanism, highlighting the fruitful results of the most recent summit in Cairo. Anastasiades, for his part, voiced his country's will to consolidate joint cooperation whether at the bilateral level or within the framework of the three-way mechanism of cooperation with the aim of pushing forward distinguished cooperation and continuing consultations regarding political issues of common interest. The talks come in light of the outcome of the seventh tripartite summit among Egypt, Cyprus and Greece that was held in October. They renewed their warnings of “tension and escalation” in the eastern Mediterranean due to the “unilateral moves” by Turkey of drilling and exploring oil and natural gas on and off-shore in North Cyprus.
