Egypt: Sisi Asserts Army’s Role in Protecting 'Civil State'
Arab World
Cairo - Mohammed Abdo HassaneinEgyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi reiterated the role of the armed forces in protecting the “civil state”, hoping the light will be shed on the army’s mission in maintaining the constitutional path, the civil state, and its democracy while ensuring it doesn't fall. Sisi was referring to the constitutional amendments that were approved last April, which consolidated the army’s role by tasking it with safeguarding the constitution and preserving the basic foundations of the state as well as the rights of individuals, in addition to protecting the country and maintaining its security and territorial integrity. Sisi confirmed that this is based on the constitution, thanking Speaker of Parliament Ali Abdel-Aal for proposing the amendments. The President was speaking during the inauguration of an animal production complex in Fayoum Governorate, south of Cairo. Sisi justified the army's participation in development projects as a matter of “national security”, explaining that the army contributed because of its capabilities. “Whether we are present or not, it remains the responsibility of the armed forces to keep this country from failing again.” The President also addressed in his speech the problems facing the public sector saying they are mainly management and not implementation issues, namely considering state facilities and public funds as “accessible” to all, adding that money is spent and the results are not satisfactory. He also affirmed that the state is concerned with restoring the efficiency of all lakes for service and production, whether on the Mediterranean or even within the state, including Lake Nasser in Aswan. Sisi also discussed geographical distribution of projects aimed at finding job opportunities in areas such as Fayoum. He also mentioned the 15,000 acres of land allocated for 3,000 greenhouses. "In all the projects were are inaugurating... if the private sector would like to take part, it can,” he noted, adding that the companies of the armed forces “will be listed on the stock exchange and this way we would offer the opportunity not only to the private sector but to all citizens.”
