Kuwait Defuses Tensions with Iran

Kuwait - Merza al-KhuwaldiKuwait contained on Sunday a brewing political crisis with Iran, which had protested the Gulf country’s hosting of a conference for the opposition the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz. Kuwaiti deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah held talks on Sunday with Iranian Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Irani to discuss bilateral relations and the latest tensions, reported the Kuwait news agency (KUNA). Jarallah stressed Kuwait's foreign policy that is based on respecting the sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs and good-neighborliness. Moreover, he expressed his “disappointment” with the hosting of such a conference, which he said was organized without obtaining permission from the concerned authorities. Legal action will be taken those involved, he revealed. He stressed that Kuwait respects Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including the Ahvaz region. The Iranian foreign ministry had on Saturday summoned Kuwait’s envoy to Tehran to protest against Kuwaiti officials hosting an “anti-Iranian” meeting. The ministry added that the meeting included a representative of a “terrorist group”, a reference to the Iranian opposition. An Iranian opposition website had released images of Kuwait National Assembly Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim meeting with Hakim al-Kaabi, a member of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz. The meeting was attended by MP Abdullah Fahad al-Enezi, said an Iranian opposition website. The Iranian officials were in Kuwait to attend a conference in support of the Ahvaz.
