Dispute Escalates Between Ennahda, Democratic Current
Arab World
Tunis- Al Mongi Al SaidaniThe Democratic Current, led by Mohamed Abbou, has threatened to withdraw from the consultations led by designate Tunisian prime minister Habib Jemli and join the opposition because of its dispute with Ennahda party on the Interior Ministry portfolio. This comes one week before Jemli chooses the next government's composition after holding more than 40 meetings with political parties leaders, national organizations, and figures from various disciplines and backgrounds. The political bureau of Democratic Current insisted on all its demands, mainly to have three ministerial portfolios (ministries of justice, interior, and administrative reform) in an effort to end the state of idleness and political corruption, as some of its leaders put it.according to some leaders. The party leaders did not rule out withdrawing from the negotiations if the demands weren’t met, arguing that they did not trust that other political parties were able to continue fighting corruption. In this context, observers considered that Ennahda fears that if one of the left-wing parties takes control of the ministry of interior then some delicate political and security issues might surface again. On top of these issues are political assassinations to which Ennahda stands behind, dispatching Tunisian youths to hotbeds and others. In the same context, Ennahda informed the Democratic Current that it didn’t accept its request regarding the ministry of interior. This, according to observers, means that all the political cards have been mixed only a few days before forming the government. Notably, Ennahda party spokesperson Ziad Ladhari resigned in objection over the way dialogue is being managed.
