Moscow-“Russia is totally serious about activating ceasefire agreement in Syria,” source who is close to the matter in Moscow told Asharq Al-Awsat.
He also expected the outcomes of Kerry-Lavrov agreement to be implemented on ground in Syria in the few coming days.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed ways to resolve the Syrian crisis and Russia’s doping scandal in a phone call on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“The sides discussed concrete steps of Russia and the United States to assist the Syrian settlement efforts and suppress the terrorist groups in the country, pursuant to the agreements reached during the U.S. state secretary’s recent visit to Moscow,” the ministry said.
“We both believe that we have an understanding of the direction we are going in and what needs to be achieved and our teams will meet shortly and we are going to continue to do that in order to bolster the cessation of hostilities and in order to increase our capacity to fight back against al-Qaeda, which is Nusra, as well as fight back against ISIS,” Kerry said.
Observers see that Russia is really concerned about ceasefire in Syria for several reasons, including the economic one since violence in Syria and inability to put common mechanisms between Russia and other countries to fight terrorism might be a burden on Russian military budget.
In addition to that, violence in Syria increases the threats of spreading chaos in the region and expanding terrorists’ activities reaching Central Asia.
On the other hand, observers note that the regime’s forces are weak, thus this urges Russians to haste in finding political solution.
