41 Groups Open Egyptian National Theater Festival

Cairo-The ninth edition of the Egyptian National Theater Festival has kicked off with an amazing show that embodies the love of theater in humans at the Egyptian Opera House. This edition will hold the name of the late actor Nour El-Sherif and will witness various shows till the August 8 at the Opera House and other national theaters.


During the opening, the Minister of Culture Helmy al-Namnam wished prosperity for the Egyptian thereat and expressed his contentment seeing that this edition is highly cultural with the participation of a large number of groups from all the provinces and governorates.


Namnam also honored eight artists who played a major role in theater and culture in Egypt mainly late actor Nour El-Sherif. The honored artists included Abdul Rahman Abu-Zahra, director Abdul Rahman al-Shafei and critic Farida al-Nakkash.


Director Nasser Abd El-Monem, the president of the festival, said that the event comprises 41 theater shows introduced by groups from across Egypt that compete on prizes worth EGP340,000.


Monem added that Cairo theaters open their doors for free for people, in an attempt to lure them back into the appreciation of the artistic values of theater.


The Festivals Supreme Committee, which includes eight members, is presided by the role model actress Samiha Ayoub.


The opening show comprised a movie featuring artists who died over the past year and left a distinguished footprint in the world of theater.


It is worth mentioning that the Library of Alexandria is participating for the first time this year through two shows.


The festival will also include discussions on many topics on theater and its development, in addition to many conferences that will be held over the span of three weeks.
