The Netherlands Fines TikTok for Violating Kids' Privacy
Technology
Asharq Al-AwsatThe Netherlands' Data Protection Authority said it has fined TikTok 750,000 euros ($885,000) for offering a privacy statement in English, saying many Dutch children who use the popular video sharing app would be unable to understand the information. "TikTok failed to provide an adequate explanation of how the app collects, processes, and uses personal data, because it didn't offer a statement on privacy in Dutch," a statement read. The Dutch Data Protection Authority said "this violates the privacy law according to which people must always be given a clear idea of what is being done with their personal data". The Dutch data protection authorities said it launched its investigation into TikTok last year. The social media service has 3.5 million users in the Netherlands. TikTok told AFP that a shorter and more accessible summary of its privacy policy for younger users had been available in Dutch since July 2020. "The Dutch Data Protection Authority has accepted this as resolving the matter," TikTok said. In May, the European Commission urged TikTok to take action to address the concerns related to its children-targeting ads - a matter that raised serious question by consumer authorities in several member states. TikTok faced similar problems in many countries around the world including the UK, which accused the app of illegally collecting personal data of millions of children in Europe.
