Sudan’s Burhan Denies Rumors of Dispute among Armed Forces
Arab World
Khartoum – Mohammed Amin YassinChairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Monday affirmed that both the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are a “united force that leaves no loophole for parties seeking to stir up sedition.” Burhan denied rumors of disputes rising within the armed forces in the country. “Our strength is in our unity, and we want this message to reach all our members everywhere,” said Burhan in a speech he gave to the RSF in the capital, Khartoum, on the Eid al-Adha holiday. “So long as the army and the RSF are united and in agreement, the country will not be affected by anything, and it is our duty and our goal to protect and guard this country,” he added. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, heads the RSF and serves as Burhan’s deputy in the Sovereignty Council. Burhan stressed the need to “commit to cohesion among the components of legitimate services to stabilize and protect the country and people”, affirming that “the army and RSF are one.” “We will not leave room for division between our military forces,” he vowed, pointing out that sacrifices are being made daily by armed forces to safeguard the nation. Dagalo, generals from the Sovereignty Council’s board, and the director of intelligence services attended Burhan’s speech at the RSF command. Previously, Dagalo had also confirmed that armed forces serving the transitional government were in total agreement. He called on civilian parties, namely the Forces of Freedom and Change, to set aside their differences and reach agreement during the transitional period. Last June, conflict arose between the army and the RSF after the latter refused to integrate forces into a unified army, a move that was stipulated in the peace agreement. The dispute sparked concerns among the people, who feared the eruption of armed conflict between the army and RSF in Khartoum.
