Speaking before the House of Representatives on Thursday, Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed said that the country reported a decrease in the number of COVID-19 deaths caused by chronic diseases in the second wave of the virus. The World Health Organization also said earlier that about 70 percent of deaths in Egypt are due to chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stress and cancer. On Wednesday, Egypt reported 512 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of infections to 167,525 since the outbreak began in February. Last October, Zayed said that more than 10 million citizens have been examined, as part of the President's initiative to examine and treat people with serious illnesses. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call from European Union Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi. Shoukry informed the EU official about development projects carried out in various sectors in Egypt in partnership with European countries. He also expressed Egypt's desire to bolster cooperation with the EU, particularly in mitigating the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, Egypt’s Ambassador to Canada Ahmed Abu Zeid discussed with Fang Liu, the Secretary-General of the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the impacts of the novel coronavirus pandemic on global civil aviation. In a phone conversation, Abu Zeid discussed the organization’s role in dealing with the effects of the pandemic on the global civil aviation sector, in addition to the current cooperation between Egypt and ICAO.
