Republicans Want to Deter Biden from Rejoining Iran Nuclear Deal

A number of House Republicans submitted a bill to prevent the United States from rejoining the Iran nuclear deal in an attempt to further pressure President Joe Biden. The officials joined efforts to ensure Washington does not return to the 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and submitted a number of letters to the president calling on him to maintain sanctions on Tehran. Congressman Jerry Carl issued a statement announcing legislation he is sponsoring to “prevent the US from rejoining the flawed Iran nuclear deal.” The bill would prohibit the president from rejoining the JCPOA until Tehran allows the UN nuclear inspectors full access to all nuclear sites, and they finalize their comprehensive report on Iran’s nuclear activities. He warned that Tehran poses a significant threat to regional and global security, and it would be a “grave mistake for Biden to rejoin the flawed Iran nuclear deal without United Nations (UN) inspectors first being able to ensure Iran is holding up its end of the agreement.” “If President Biden chooses to reenter this deal, it will enable Iran to further expand their nuclear program, fund terror around the globe and engage in cyber warfare against the United States,” added Carl. Representative Mike Rogers, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released a statement following reports that Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) struck a three-month deal limiting the IAEA’s ability to monitor Iran’s nuclear activity. “We cannot allow Iran to become a nuclear power and destabilize the Middle East further. Inspections are a critical part of verifying that Iran is staying true to their commitment.” Rogers indicated that this scenario has been seen before, and the US cannot afford a repeat of the “flawed, defective Iran nuclear deal.” He asserted the importance of maintaining the sanctions imposed in 2018 and holding Iran accountable for its nefarious nuclear actions. Meanwhile, House Republicans warned Biden against lifting any sanctions on Iran. Members of the Homeland Security Committee said Tehran supports international terrorism and has ignored restrictions on its nuclear program. They pointed to Iran’s “malign activities,” including its nuclear program, ballistic and cruise missile development, weapons proliferation, “support for terrorism, hostage-taking, cyberattacks and gross human rights violations,” calling them “unconscionable.” They urged Biden to reconsider lifting sanctions on Iran, warning that doing so would be a “historic mistake”, while saying that the country poses an “ever-imminent threat to US democracy and national security.”
