Renowned French publisher L'Harmattan recently released the French translation of "The Pearl and The Sea: analytical study of Ali Abdullah Khalifa's Poetry" by Dr. Wijdan Alsayegh as part the "Literary Approaches" book series. In her 118-page book, Alsayegh introduced a panorama of Khalifa's poem collections, in which she analyzed the themes he chose and their connections with the cultural heritage in the Gulf region, especially Bahrain. The author showed a special focus on the semantic fields used in the poems. "How could words introduce a poet with this level of depth and understanding of the cultural heritage as a cultural infrastructure of the Arab individual and his collective imagination in a human record full of changes, hopes and pains? The poet spontaneously depicts the details of our daily life and explores the sources of struggles haunting humans who dream of a peaceful and secure life," she said. Alsayegh also discussed a number of poems she chose from Khalifa's ten collections, including the "Plaints of Masts" (Anin al-Sawari) (released in Beirut by Dar Al Malayin in 1969), "A Lullaby to Sea Star" published in 2019 and "Lonely Moon" translated into French (Lune Solitaire/2006) and Portuguese (2014). "The Pearl and the Sea" was translated into French by Algerian translation professor Hamed al-Arabi. Its cover was designed by Bahraini artist Abdullah Youssef. The French version will be followed with an Arabic version that is set to be released by the Arab Institute for Research and Publishing in Beirut, in the coming days.
