Egypt registered 89 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the lowest since April 4, increasing the total infections in the country to 97,237, according to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). It is the first day for Egypt’s COVID-19 daily infections to fall below 100. In addition, Egypt recorded 12 COVID-19 fatalities, taking the death toll to 5,243, while 800 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals, bringing the total recoveries to 65,118. Since June, the Egyptian authorities eased the lockdown and precautionary measures that were imposed in March. Yet, wearing masks remain compulsory in public spaces. Earlier, Egypt's Minister of Health Dr. Hala Zayed announced that Egypt has overcome the first wave of the coronavirus and is prepared to face a potential second wave. In another context, Zayed on Saturday held a virtual meeting with her Sudanese counterpart Sara Abdel Azim Hassanein to discuss cooperation in the health sector. The ministers discussed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s initiative to treat one million Africans infected with Hepatitis C, identify which centers the initiative will operate from, and kickstart the process to register Sudanese citizens in it, MoHP added. It further pledged to send Sudan medication, PCR devices, and liver virus detectors, while training medical teams on how to screen and diagnose Hepatitis C. Zayed also urged Hassanein to quickly send medical reports of those injured during the Sudanese revolution, so that Egypt can treat them in its hospitals for free.
