Tunisia: Ennahda Movement Fears Unity between Liberal, Leftist Parties

The media campaign launched by the Ennahda Shura Council stirred concerns that the 2013 scenario will repeat itself – when Ennahda was pulled out of the rule under the pressure of liberal and leftist parties. The campaign targeted some parties that incited violence and targeted sovereign centers of the country. To avail from this scenario, leaders from Ennahda called for solidarity among the current ruling coalition components against parties seeking to turn the table and change the concept of authority-opposition after proving failure. This hints at the defeat of some parties especially leftist parties in the past legislative elections in which the total of Popular Front deputies dropped from 15 to only one. The same happened with Nidaa Tounes that allied with Ennahda but its parliamentary representation dropped from 86 deputies to only three. Ennahda Movement warned of the provocation against the state’s institutions and the targeting of the parliament, fearing the scenario that took place in 2013 will occur again. In this context, Head of the Coalition of the Popular Front Mongi Rahoui denied news circulating about official political parties launching these calls and considered them as ‘calls from unknown parties’. Meanwhile, seven opposition parties demanded the release of three Syndicate members who were arrested around one month ago in the case of assaulting Dignity Coalition deputee Hamas al-Afas. Some of these parties are, the Popular Front, the Workers' Party, the Socialist Party, the Baath Movement, and the Patriotic Democratic Socialist Party (PPDS). They demanded opening an impartial investigation in this case, stressing confidence in the judiciary independence.
