Syrian Cattle Herder Wounded by Israeli Troops

Tel Aviv - Asharq Al-Awsat
Israel's army has shot and wounded a Syrian cattle herder and took him to an Israeli hospital for treatment. According to a preliminary Israeli investigation, the incident occurred after the man crossed from Lebanon into Shebaa Farms. The area is a disputed enclave along the frontier between Israel, Syria and Lebanon. The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, said that according to the Israeli military the man crossed the Blue Line, the UN-demarcated border. It said UNIFIL's commander was in touch with the parties and has urged restraint. It said it sent investigators to the area to determine the circumstances and location of the incident. The Israeli army spokesman said the shepherd had not intentionally stepped into the area where he was shot. But the spokesman justified the shooting by saying that “in the past years, Hezbollah has sent to the area fighters disguised as shepherds to spy on and check possibilities for attacks against Israeli troops.”
