The Vice-Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Gen. Mohamed ‘Hemedti’ Hamdan Dagalo, attributed the recent security developments in Sudan to restrictions imposed on state institutions and security forces which prevent them from carrying out their duties in full. Hemedti said in a press statement that authorities are in the process of imposing new measures to tackle recent developments by granting the agencies broad powers to maintain security in all regions of the country. He stressed that there is no immunity for any person or entity, and that the authorities will deal decisively with anything that threatens national security and the safety of citizens. The General managed to strike a deal between conflicting parties to achieve peace in El-Geneina city, west of Darfur, which witnessed tribal clashes that killed 65, injured more than 100, and displaced thousands. Hemedti said the government of West Darfur State was responsible for the exacerbating events, for not responding earlier to the issue which led to the instability. Meanwhile, Attorney General Taj al-Sir Ali al-Hebr said that the committee investigating the events in Geneina began its work with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism. He added that the committee is ready to receive complaints, provided that they are supported by evidence that will help bring the perpetrators to justice. The leaders of the civil administration and conflicting tribes agreed to put an end to hostilities, in order to achieve security and stability in the state. Sudan’s Security and Defense Council announced new measures to face the current security situation in light of tribal conflicts in some areas, which have left dozens dead and wounded. It also increased police presence on main roads. The Council directed commanders of the military units and security services to submit detailed reports on the security situation in all parts of the country. Meanwhile, the Doctors Central Committee announced that following the incidents in Port Sudan city, the death toll reached 15, including two children, and 111 injured. In a statement, the Committee accused the employees of the former regime of causing recent events and pointed to the failure of the security services in ensuring stability in the city. The government of the Red Sea state announced the formation of a special investigation committee into the events that took place in Port Sudan in the past days. It said in a statement that it had arrested 21 persons suspected in causing the riots, and deployed many forces in the areas to ensure stability and security. The events in Port Sudan began when two persons in the market fought with white weapons, which led to the death of one of them, and the situation developed into tribal clashes. The incidents led to several deaths and injuries, including seven personnel from the security forces.
