Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, discussed Wednesday the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, according to the state news agency SANA. The two officials underscored the need to stick by the rules and measures of the Committee and to preserve its independent decision without any foreign intervention. They also discussed the political solution for Syria's crisis and the efforts needed to make the political solution a success. Earlier, President Bashar al-Assad received Russian President’s Special Envoy Alexander Lavrentiev. The meeting highlighted the political process in which both sides affirmed their support to the work of the Constitutional Committee that excludes any foreign intervention or politicization. Pedersen and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had also met and discussed means to provide stable conditions for the Committee to operate, said Russia’s Foreign Ministry. The Committee was established on October 30, 2019, in Geneva. Pedersen and Lavrov stressed the importance of promoting a political process led and implemented by Syrians themselves with UN support, as stipulated by Security Council Resolution 2254 and in the outcomes of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi. They also exchanged views on the current situation in Syria and its neighboring countries. “The two parties agreed that achieving lasting stability and security in Syria and the whole region is only possible if the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are respected,” the statement added. They emphasized the need to intensify comprehensive humanitarian aid for all Syrians throughout the country without discrimination and in accordance with the standards of international humanitarian law. “This would help create conditions for the voluntary, safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons to their homes.”
