Palestinians Seek to Announce State Establishment to Counter Trump Peace Plan

PLO Executive Committee member Wasel Abu Yousef stated that the Palestinian leadership has devised a strategic plan to confront the US peace plan, which President Donald Trump is set to unveil next week. The Palestinian plan is based on the “establishment of a Palestinian state on the ground” and resisting and completely boycotting Israel, even if this leads to the collapse of the Palestinian Authority. Abu Yousef is part of a committee that presented the PLO with recommendations on how to counter the American plan. He added: “If this open war continues then we will immediately move in three directions.” He told Asharq Al-Awsat that the first step would take place on the international level through the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly, The Hague and other arenas in an attempt to persuade them to issue resolutions that protect the Palestinians’ legitimate rights. The second seeks to activate all forms of popular resistance and to implement the decisions of the Palestinian Central Council and Palestinian National Council, including ending political and security agreements and withdrawing the recognition of Israel. The third step calls for completely boycotting Israel and working on isolating its government and holding it to account. US President Donald Trump is expected to disclose his long-awaited plan ahead of a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington on Tuesday. An informed Palestinian source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the US plan is deemed a declaration of “open war” and it signals the end of the dream of a Palestinian state. “All options are open, including the declaration of a Palestinian state through transforming the PA into a state,” he explained. This means Executive Committee of the PLO will act as an interim government, while the Palestinian National Council will serve as a parliament. According to the source, President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to submit an official request for full membership at the UN and then to turn to the General Assembly to take decisions under Article 7 and the “Uniting for Peace Resolution”. This will pave the way for a wider confrontation with Israel.
