The Egyptian government has stressed fighting all forms of corruption. This came after the public prosecutors' office announced the arrest of Head of Egypt's Tax Authority Abdel-Azim Hussein on Saturday on charges of receiving bribes. “It was proved through recorded phone calls and meetings that he received money and gifts as bribes,” it added in a statement. The country’s Attorney General Hamada El Sawy ordered the Supreme State Security Prosecution to investigate the incident. The Public Prosecution called upon various media outlets to investigate the accuracy of their news reported on the incident and to abide by official statements it will issue. Judicial sources said Hussein along with three accountants suspected in the bribery case arrived on Friday at the headquarters of the State Security Prosecution in the Fifth Settlement to be interrogated. Deputy tax authority director Reda Abdul Kader has been named acting head of the agency, the finance ministry said on Saturday. “Finance Minister Mohamed Maait affirmed that there is no one above law and that there can be no covering up of any corruption,” the ministry added in a statement. He announced that the pace of work on the national project to modernize and mechanize the tax system will be accelerated, contributing to enhancing administrative and financial governance, establishing integrity and transparency values, facing tax evasion, establishing tax justice pillars, and collecting the state’s right. Maait expressed dependence on the new project and said it “greatly reduces human interference in the tax system and ensures justice, enhancing integrity and transparency and preserving public money.” Egypt’s Administrative Control Authority has arrested prominent officials over the past years on various corruption charges, the most important of whom was former Minister of Agriculture Salah Helal in 2015. This was followed by the resignation of former Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab’s government although accusations were only against the jailed minister.
