The Pentagon: Iran is Arming Houthi Militias

Washington– The U.S. Pentagon said on Wednesday that Houthi militias will pay the price for the recent missile attacks on the USS Mason off the coast of Yemen.

The Mason, a U.S. destroyer deployed in the Red Sea, was targeted by missiles off the southern coast of Yemen on Sunday. The destroyer reportedly fired defense missiles and employed countermeasures.

Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters on Tuesday that the U.S. was “looking very hard right now” at who was responsible for the attack, which he described as involving “a shore-launched cruise missile.”

He added that the U.S. was considering retaliatory strikes against “whoever is responsible for the recent missile attacks.”

The missiles were fired at the USS Mason from Houthi-controlled territory in war-torn Yemen, Davis said, adding that the guided-missile destroyer deployed “onboard defensive measures” and was undamaged.

“We will get to the bottom of this and we will make sure that anybody who interferes with freedom of navigation or anybody who puts U.S. Navy ships at risk does so at their own peril,” the Pentagon spokesman said.

It was obvious that Iran was delivering arms and artillery to Houthi rebels, he stated.

“The Houthis have said publicly before that they would target any ships in that area that were supporting the coalition against them,” Davis said, according to Reuters.

“So the facts certainly seem to point to it, but we are still assessing and we will have more for you,” he added.
