El-Sisi: No One Can Come Between Egypt and its Arab Brothers

The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said yesterday that “No one can interfere in the close and historic relationship between Egypt and its Arab brothers” and noted that his country “has an independent policy based on maintaining Arab national security through the Egyptian vision”. He also described media reports that spoke of a “difference in Egyptian and Saudi positions” as “some claims made by the media, not by the Egyptian state”. During a speech that he made yesterday at a cultural seminar held by the armed forces, he added “The rumours that have been circulating on social networking sites are discomforting”.

During the past few days, media outlets have been talking about the Egyptian – Saudi disagreement surrounding how to best deal with the situation in Syria, especially after Egypt voted in favour of two draft resolutions submitted by France and Russia on the tragic situation in the city of Aleppo at the Security Council.

The Russian draft resolution was only approved by four members including Egypt, as opposed to the French draft resolution which called for an immediate end to air strikes and military flights over the Syrian city of Aleppo that was approved by 11 members, but that was blocked by the Russian veto. The Saudi representative at the Council criticised Egypt’s vote in favour of the Russian draft resolution.
