Riyadh- Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz appointed Thamer Al-Sabhan as the first Minister of State for Arabian Gulf Affairs at the Foreign Ministry.
Sabhan told Asharq al-Awsat that political files in – Gulf and Countries overlooking it – will be on top of his tasks in his new position during the upcoming period. Sabhan, who was the Saudi ambassador to Iraq since 2015 until the appointment, considered his new missions a huge responsibility, stressing that he will work hard to fulfill the political leadership orientations.
“I hope for this post to be a chance for me to serve my religion, king, country and people,” said Sabhan, adding that he will commence his missions after delivering the oath infront of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
King Salman issued a royal decree on Sunday naming Thamer Al-Sabhan as the first Minister of State for Arabian Gulf Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, knowing that this position is a newly introduced one.
On 28 August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iraq requested that its Saudi counterpart replace the Saudi Ambassador in the aftermath of Sabhan accusing Iraqi militias linked to Iran in trying to assassinate him in Iraq.
Armed Shiite groups, loyal to Iran, threatened Sabhan several times in the media, demanding sacking Sahban after his attempts to unveil the criminal Iranian role in Iraq.
