Yemen is witnessing a surge in coronavirus-related deaths as the war-torn country grapples with the third wave of the outbreak. On Saturday, the national emergency committee for COVID-19 in government-held areas recorded 30 new infections and nine fatalities, bringing the death toll to 1,682. It said four of the deaths were recorded in the governorate of Hadhramout, three in Aden and two in Marib. On Friday, the country had registered 31 new infections and also nine deaths. The number of reported confirmed COVID-19 cases in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government in south and east Yemen had reached 8,891 with 5,500 associated recoveries and 1,709 active cases, since the first COVID-19 case was recorded in April 2020. However, the country’s limited testing capacity, the difficulty of accessing treatment centers and the perceived risks of seeking care means that the true number of coronavirus cases is much higher than recorded. Yemen on Thursday received its third batch of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX global vaccine-sharing scheme.
