A US State Department spokesperson reiterated Washington’s commitment to an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen. The Iran-backed Houthi militias must seriously engage in peace efforts if they really want to end the conflict, he added, while commenting on a Omani delegation’s visit to Sanaa. The visit to the Houthi-held capital kicked off on Saturday with the Omanis meeting with Houthi officials. The spokesperson told Asharq Al-Awsat said Washington was pleased with the visit, stressing that it remains committed to an immediate comprehensive nationwide ceasefire to offer urgent relief aid to the Yemeni people. The official added that he believes the Omanis were in Sanaa because they realize that the continuation of the conflict in Yemen poses a threat to the stability of the region. He stressed that Washington will continue to closely work with the international community and regional partners to end the conflict. US President Joe Biden’s administration has set as a priority ending the war in Yemen. Since coming to office this year, he has named a special envoy to Yemen, who has carried out six tours of the Gulf region as part of the renewed diplomatic push. Envoy Tim Lenderking’s efforts have yet to yield any results as they have stumbled at the Houthis’ consistent unwillingness to engage in peace efforts, whether American or Saudi Arabia’s latest initiative to end the crisis. Instead, the militias have pressed on with an offensive on the Marib province, heedless of international calls to end the campaign and the threat it poses to the lives of a million Yemenis displaced there. The militias have been emboldened by the Biden administration’s decision to revoke former President Donald Trump’s decision to blacklist the Houthis.
