The Saudi Geological Survey announced the discovery of the remains of an extinct primitive whale.

The Saudi Geological Survey announced the discovery of the remains of an extinct primitive whale, dating back to 37 million years, near the northern Qurayyat governorate. This major archeological find belongs to the Upper Eocene era. It's the first-of-its-kind in the Kingdom, and is of great importance for the research and scientific efforts. CEO of the Saudi Geological Commission Abdullah Al-Shamrani said the discovery is of global importance and a great addition to the scientific research given its historic value and the secrets it could unveil about ancient geological ages, and maritime environments. A team from the commission's archeology department surveyed limestone and other chalky substances, near the governorates of Qurayyat and Haditha, to gather and identify the types of marine fossils and their deposition on environments in northern Saudi Arabia, 37 million years ago.
