Cairo - Asharq Al-AwsatThe Arab Parliament announced on Friday that it was honoring Speaker of the Saudi Shura Council Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh with the order of merit for “Arab distinction”. The honor will be bestowed upon him during a general session in Cairo on Saturday. Al-Sheikh had arrived in the Egyptian capital on Friday at the invitation of President of the Arab Parliament Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Oussomi. He was received at the airport by Al-Oussomi, Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Osama bin Ahmed Nuqali and Saudi Permanent Representative to the Arab League Ambassador Abdulrahman Al-Jumaah. Al-Oussomi said Al-Sheikh was being honored in recognition of his role in defending the causes of the Arab nation and the efforts he is making in parliamentary diplomacy to bolster joint Arab work. It is also a recognition of his effective contributions at Arab, regional and international parliamentary events, he added. Al-Sheikh has served as speaker of the Shura Council since 2009. He previously served as justice minister and as deputy chief of the executive office of the Arab Justice Ministers Council. In a statement on Thursday, Al-Oussomi said Al-Sheikh’s accomplishments have transformed him into a “national symbol and the Arab Parliament is honored in recognizing them.” He will be the first Arab figure to be honored with the order, which is only bestowed upon speakers of parliament and prime ministers who have distinguished themselves in defending Arab rights and furthering their causes.
