The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) Project (Masam) for clearing mines in Yemen, said on Sunday it dismantled 2,183 landmines, unexploded ordnances and explosives devices in the second week of June. KSrelief announced that the landmines included two antipersonnel mines, 728 anti-tank mines, 1,446 unexploded ordnance and seven explosive devices. Since the launch of the project, as many as 254,918 mines have been dismantled. More than 1.2 million mines have been planted by the Iran-backed Houthi militias in the country. The project seeks to clear Yemen of the mines that were randomly planted by the Houthis, causing hundreds of deaths and injuries among the population. Masam boasts 32 demining teams that train local demining engineers, give them modern equipment and help victims. A United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report released last April said that 348 Yemenis had perished from mines in 2020. The UNDP is currently working with the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center (YEMAC), which answers to the National Mine Action Committee (NMAC), to help advance demining operations in Yemen. Meanwhile, KSrelief distributed on Saturday 46 tons and 759 kilograms of food baskets to needy families, displaced people and people with special needs in the Taiz governorate. Some 2,622 individuals benefitted from the aid, which is an extension of humanitarian efforts carried out by Saudi Arabia to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people from the humanitarian crisis.
