Iran has dispatched reinforcements to its new base in Syria’s eastern Aleppo countryside in the vicinity of US-backed Kurdish Syrian Democratic forces. The SDF controls the nearby region east of the Euphrates River, which is seen as the border line separating areas held by Moscow’s allies and other held by Washington’s. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said pro-Iran militias have brought in military reinforcements to their base, located on a hill in the village of Habbuba, which is tucked between al-Khafsa and Maskanah. SDF forces control the other side of the Euphrates bank. The reinforcements included weapons, ammunition and medium-range surface-to-surface missiles that were transported from regions west of the Euphrates. This is the second time in 20 days that reinforcements are brought in to the area. The purpose of the deployment remains to be seen, said the Observatory. Meanwhile, the pro-Iran militias, led by the Afghan Fatemiyoun Brigade, have continued their intense recruitment campaign, luring new members with financial gains. Since February, they have managed to recruit 985 new members. The campaign is focused on the Maskanah, al-Safira, Deir Hafir and other villages in eastern Aleppo. To counter Iranian influence in the area, Russian and regime forces had set up a joint military point on the western banks of the Euphrates, near the village of Khan al-Shaar. Khan al-Shaar is located west of Maskanah, which is controlled by Damascus. This new point is located near SDF positions east of the Euphrates. It boasts heavy vehicles and dozens of soldiers.
