Egypt Seeks to Break Deadlock Between Palestinians, Israel

Cairo - Waleed Abdul RahmanEgypt has called for breaking the deadlock between Palestinians and Israelis, affirming efforts to ensure a fair and lasting peace in the Middle East. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Friday received a phone call from Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. Shoukry asserted that Egypt will continue its efforts for achieving peace in the Middle East in line with international law and Security Council decisions. The Egyptian minister stressed the need to break the deadlock between the Palestinians and Israelis to launch a comprehensive negotiating process, in a manner that guarantees stability in the region, according to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez. The Egyptian FM also underlined the need to prevent any escalation between the two sides and to push forward reconstruction efforts and development support for all parts of the Palestinian territories. Cairo is keen to move with practical and serious steps towards achieving security and stability for all the peoples of the region, he added. Shoukry met last May with former Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and he called for carrying out serious and constructive negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis. On another note, Egypt kept the Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip open to facilitate the entry of aid and humanitarian cases. Cairo noted that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s initiative to provide support for the reconstruction process and to meet the development needs of Palestinians is a reflection of the country’s commitment towards the Palestinian cause.
