Egypt on Thursday announced providing in-home vaccination services for patients who are unable to leave the house, while the Health Ministry took preventive measures to face a possible rare infection called “black fungus.” Egypt’s Health Minister Hala Zayed said last Wednesday that medical teams will make home visits to vaccinate homebound people. Well-trained teams will carry out the vaccination in homes while two ambulances will be equipped in each governorate to transport the medical teams. Those wishing to apply for a home vaccine must register on the ministry’s official website, and then call the hotline. After confirming the person’s circumstances, a healthcare worker qualified to give the vaccine will be sent to his or her home. In the past 24 hours, Egypt recorded 1,151 new coronavirus cases, up from 1,140 on Tuesday. It reported 43 deaths and 876 recovered cases. There have now been a total of 257,725 confirmed cases, 14,850 deaths, and 188,567 recoveries in the country. The Egyptian government had already announced that from May 6 till the end of the month, all restaurants, cafés, shops, and malls must close at 9 pm to prevent further spread of the virus. Approximately 1.3 million Egyptians have received a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine since the country began its vaccination campaign in January. Meanwhile, health officials started preparing for the possible spread of the black fungus, which appeared in India among coronavirus patients. Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population revealed that it prepared the first isolation room for patients infected with black fungus at Al-Negela Hospital in the Matrouh governorate and stated that the hospital has not yet received any cases. The Ministry of Health said the disease is rare, but could occur due to wrong or excessive use of certain drugs used to treat COVID-19 patients. It said patients infected with black fungus are treated with anti-fungal drugs that are prescribed under full medical supervision, adding that the treatment ranges from four to six weeks.
