Morocco’s Justice and Development Party Affirms Adherence to King's Decisions
Arab World
Rabat- Asharq Al-AwsatThe Justice and Development Party’s (PJD) National Council affirmed on Monday its permanent adherence to King Mohammed VI’s decisions aimed at defending the kingdom’s national and territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara. It, however, stressed the party’s “principled and firm stances” and strong support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against the “brutal Zionist occupation.” In the final communique of the two-day regular session on Saturday, the National Council affirmed its support to the Palestinians’ right to return to their country, restore freedom and establish a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. It reiterated its “condemnation and absolute rejection of the so-called Deal of the Century” and warned from the risks of the normalization penetration on Morocco’s political, economic, social and cultural fabric.” This stance was expressed following a lengthy discussion on Prime Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani’s signing of the normalization deal with Israel on Dec. 22. The majority of the Council’s members refused to hold an exceptional party meeting to hold Othmani accountable for signing the deal. This meeting was requested by a group of National Council members in an attempt to oust Othmani, the source explained. Most of the members deemed this meeting unnecessary, especially that the PJD is required to prepare for the elections scheduled for later this year. According to the same source, this stance confirmed the members’ confidence in Othmani, adding that they understood his justifications. According to a PJD source close to the matter, the phrase “risks of the normalization” in the final communique has sparked controversy with Othmani expressing reservations. Othmani wanted to ensure his party’s continued support for the Palestinian cause, the source noted, yet its National Council voted against his will and included this phrase to appease members who opposed this deal. Othmani has earlier stated that the PJD’s strategy is based on being loyal to the king, fulfilling the unified national principles, contributing to political and social reform, and maintaining its political and organizational unity. He cited a royal statement on Dec. 10, which stressed that recent “measures do not in any manner affect Morocco’s ongoing and sustained commitment to the just Palestinian cause.”
