Tragedy Strikes in Egyptian Homes over Coronavirus

An Egyptian woman was left in shock with the death of her three sons, just months apart, from the novel coronavirus. Her youngest son Amro Mohammad Abdallah, 33, died last Ramadan after catching the coronavirus, leaving behind an unborn child. She then received news of her older 45-year-old son, Amjad’s death, also as a result of the virus in one of the private hospitals in Luxor city. Moments later the bereaved lady received even harsher news of her third son, Ayman, dying of the same disease. Two days ago, the news sent shockwaves across Egypt, especially after local newspapers and some social media users spread the news of their deaths. A family member who preferred to stay anonymous told Asharq Al-Awsat details of the painful event, saying: “After Amro’s death, who is the youngest among my cousins, his brothers contracted the virus after coming in contact with him he was being treated.” “They were then isolated in one of the private hospitals in Luxor and were given treatment. They were put in separate rooms until the condition Amjad, who had undergone an open-heart surgery shortly before, deteriorated and passed away,” he added. “Hearing the news, Ayman also began to deteriorate and was transferred to another hospital to receive intensive care; minutes after arriving, however, he also died, traumatized by the news of his brother’s death. In a very saddening and painful scene, both of their bodies were transferred to the village.” The three brothers used to work at one company in Qus in southern Egypt. In contrast to the bleak scene in Qus, 400 kilometers away, the city of al-Adwa south of Cairo is celebrating the recovery of the oldest Egyptian coronavirus patient, aged 107, according to the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Local Development. She was quarantined on June 25 and has now left the hospital.
