The Senior Criminal Court in Sudan has adjourned to July 11 a hearing to try an officer on murder charges. The session was held amid tight security measures and was attended by many legal figures, while thousands of civilians gathered outside the court demanding strict punishment against the perpetrator. Major Youssif Mohieddin from the Rapid Support Forces is accused of killing Hanafi Abdul Shakour by running over him with a vehicle while dispersing a sit-in outside the Armed Forces General Command in Omdurman city on June 30, 2019. During the dispersal, dozens of people were killed, injured and went missing, which required establishing a special commission of inquiry into the heinous crime. Tuesday’s hearing was headed by Appeal Judge Salah Eddin Mahjoub and was attended by two judges of the General Court in the presence of the accused and representatives of the Public Prosecution. In December 2019, a Sudanese court sentenced 29 members of the national intelligence service to death by hanging over the killing of a teacher in detention in February during protests that led to the overthrow of former president Omar al-Bashir. Dozens of protesters have been killed while resisting Bashir’s regime, and those accused of killing them are expected to be brought to trial, which is one of the protesters’ main demands.
