Hariri Calls Lebanon’s Presidency a ‘Failure’

Lebanon's former Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, has slammed President Michel Aoun, saying he has violated the constitutional power-sharing formula. After talks with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian at Dar a-Fatwa on Tuesday, Hariri said: “Only through coexistence Lebanon can survive. Any kind of extremism or fanaticism we see these days is a path toward the unknown.” “Lebanon is the country of coexistence, and any slide in another direction leads to fragmentation ... We will not allow this,” added Hariri, who heads al-Mustaqbal movement. On tensions on the streets of Beirut, he warned of infiltrators who, he said, sought to shed blood in the country. An anti-government protest on Saturday turned violent as supporters of Hezbollah clashed with some demonstrators calling on the group to disarm. Later that night, there was an exchange of gunfire between residents of two Beirut districts. Hariri in a series of Tweets on Tuesday, said Aoun’s six-year mandate has been characterized by “failure, indecision and spitefulness” and a breach of the constitution. “The strong presidency is competing with the strong president in their speed of failure, indecision, spitefulness, violation of the constitution, stirring up feelings and chronic starvation in order to control appointments and administrative, financial and economic positions,” Hariri said.
