Jordan, Iraq Discuss Oil, Electricity Projects

Iraq and Jordan discussed developing economic and trade cooperation, as well as efforts to counter terrorism and establish electricity networks. Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday and held talks with his counterpart Fuad Hussein, President Barham Saleh, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, and other officials. Iraqi Foreign Minister announced at a joint press conference with Safadi that they discussed bilateral relations and the memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries. They also asserted they will together to combat terrorism and exchange information on ISIS terrorist organization. Hussein said they also touched on the electricity and oil projects, as well as commercial relations and means of developing them. During the talks, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry was contacted to further strengthen the relations between all three countries and plan for future meetings. For his part, Jordan’s FM affirmed that the visit to Iraq comes within the framework of both countries’ efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic and Jordan's aim to collaborate with Iraq to counter terrorism. The talks aim to restore momentum towards deepening economic cooperation, he indicated, voicing his country’s keenness on continuing to connect electricity networks, activating trade through Aqaba, building an oil pipeline between Basra and Aqaba, and establishing a joint industrial zone. Iraq's Prime Minister stressed the importance of the Iraqi-Jordanian relations and cooperation in economic fields. During his meeting with Safadi, Kadhimi said that the relations between the two countries will further develop given the challenges that face them both, especially with the spread of the coronavirus. Jordan’s FM also met with the Iraqi President who stressed the importance of enhancing the historical and cultural ties with Jordan. During the meeting, Salih said Iraq looks forward to establishing advanced relations by raising the cooperation with Jordan in all fields that serve both countries' common interests. He stressed the need to unite efforts and exchange medical expertise to reduce the repercussions of COVID-19 pandemic and overcome its health and economic effects.
