Sudanese Military Leaders, Civilians Convene to Discuss Partnership

The civilian and military components at the transitional authority in Sudan held Saturday a meeting to evaluate the partnership between them in the past period. Sources with knowledge of the matter told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the meeting included the main military component at the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, heads of Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) blocs, and the political reference for the transitional government. Sources added that the meeting assessed the partnership in the previous period since signing the constitutional declaration between civilians and military leaders, as well as the political performance of the transitional government. They added that the meeting also discussed joint issues between the two transitional authorities (sovereignty council and cabinet) in addition to the current situation in the country. Last year on August 17, Sudan’s dissolved military council and FFC leaders had signed a constitutional declaration for the 39-month transition period. Hamdok praised on several occasions the partnership between civilians and military leaders, despite tensions earlier that almost quashed the partnership following Sudan's Head of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Feb in Uganda and agreeing on normalizing ties. Meanwhile, the guards of Burhan announced downing a drone that was flying over his house in Khartoum. Sudanese army spokesperson Brigadier General Amer Muhammad al-Hassan told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the drone belonged to the police, and it was carrying out regular monitoring, according to the measures taken by the authorities to impose a curfew in the country. Hassan added that the drone was operated by the air force in the Armed Forces, explaining that the forces guarding Burhan's house were not aware of its mission so they shot it down. Sudanese authorities are imposing a curfew across the country, starting from 8 pm till the next morning in efforts to face the novel coronavirus outbreak.
