Iraqi PMF Official in Washington for Talks
Arab World
Washington, London - Asharq Al-AwsatHead of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and national security adviser Faleh al-Fayyadh is currently in Washington to hold talks with US officials amid Iranian-US and Iranian-Saudi tension that escalated after the last month’s attack against two major facilities run by Saudi Aramco. US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale was expected to sit down with the Iraqi official. Fayyadh’s talks are expected to focus on attacks on American interests in Iraq. Last week, two rockets struck areas near the US embassy in Baghdad. The US-led coalition that helps fight ISIS in Iraq said it would not tolerate any attacks on its personnel. Fayyadh recently solidified his position as head of the PMF, especially after Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi issued a decree on restructuring of the force and eliminating the position of deputy chief, which was occupied by Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who is close to Iran.
