Burhan: Partnership between Militants, Civilians Leads Sudan to Democracy

Head of the Sudanese Transitional Military Council (TMC) Abdul Fattah al-Burhan has asserted that the partnership between the army and the civil forces in the transitional authority will lead the country towards a peaceful transition of power and democratic transformation. Meanwhile, the UN stressed its support to the transitional government against the challenges. Director of the information department at the presidency, Brigadier General Taher Abu Hajja stated Sunday that Burhan had called on the heads of states and governments to exert efforts to Sudan from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. He made this call during last week’s Africa-Russia Summit in Sochi and the 18th conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku, Azerbaijan. At Sochi, Burhan explained the huge changes occurring in Sudan after the revolution that ousted the former regime. Sudanese officials succeeded in garnering support from the participating countries, Hajja added. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok stressed Khartoum’s keenness on reinforcing cooperation and coordination with the UN and hailed the support provided by the international organization to the transitional government. He met on Sunday UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed, who had arrived in the country on a three-day visit. She affirmed that the UN supports the transitional government’s priorities, starting with ending the war and establishing peace. The UN Deputy Secretary-General stated to the press that she will relay the positive signals she received from the government to the international community, lauding the presence of seven women in the cabinet.
