Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi reiterated his government’s commitment to the three terms of reference for peace and ending the Houthi-led insurgency. He also warned against the dangers imposed by Iran’s expansionist ambitions in the region. Hadi’s remarks were made during a Monday meeting in Riyadh with US Ambassador to Yemen Christopher Henzel. According to official sources, Henzel relayed his country's “support for Yemen’s unity and legitimate leadership, especially in achieving all aspirations and choices of the Yemeni people regarding security, stability, and peace.” Hadi and Henzel discussed key developments in Yemen. The president also repeated his early 2012 warning against Iran’s expansion in the region which is being carried out in Yemen through Houthi proxy militias. Hadi said that developments in Yemen proved that he was right when he also cautioned against Iran’s threat on international maritime navigation. More so, Hadi appreciated the US support for peace in Yemen and praised cooperation between the two countries on political, economic, and security levels. For his part, Henzel expressed his pleasure to meet with the President and that the meeting reflected mutual cooperation between Yemen and the US. Yemeni Foreign Minister Mohammed Al-Hadhrami, in his speech before the UN General Assembly, had called for the international community to intervene and put an end to Iran’s regional hostile behavior. Iran has been running its expansionist agenda through terrorist proxies spread across the region. “My country has been deeply wounded by sectarians and terrorists trying to achieve their own ends,” Hadhrami told the General Assembly, adding that Houthi militias, supported by Iran, have proved to be “capable of untold destruction.” Condemning Iran as “the main sponsor of terrorism throughout the world,” Hadhrami said Tehran’s “expansionist agenda” led it to wage proxy wars through militias like the Houthis “who have destroyed everything that was beautiful in my country: homes, places of worship, and hospitals.”
