Qatar and Turkey confirmed on Tuesday that they intend to strengthen bilateral relations. This comes at a time when Ankara is looking to open new horizons with Gulf countries to revive its economy that is shaken by the collapse of its local currency. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he will be taking the necessary steps to reinforce his country’s relations with Gulf states. Meanwhile, Qatar and Turkey held the 7th session of the Qatari-Turkish Supreme Strategic Committee in Doha and signed cooperation agreements in various fields. Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Erdogan co-chaired the meeting. Turkey and Qatar signed 15 new agreements to boost cooperation between the two countries. The meetings of the Committee have been serving as an opportunity for boosting Qatari-Turkish relations, as the agreements signed on Tuesday will be added to 80 existing deals between the two states. “The strategic cooperation between Qatar and Turkey includes various vital fields of economy, industry, security, defense, culture, education, sports and transport,” tweeted Sheikh Tamim, saying that he discussed with Erdogan means of deepening cooperation. Erdogan visited on Tuesday Khalid bin Al Walid Military Camp, the headquarters of the Qatari-Turkish Joint Command in Doha. During his stop, Erdogan noted that “all the peoples of the Gulf are true brothers of Turkey, regardless of their origins, sects or beliefs.” “We would never like to see tensions, conflicts and animosities in this region,” said the president. “We are working to develop our cooperation with the Gulf countries on the basis of respect and mutual interest,” he added. “We do not differentiate between security and stability in both Qatar and our country,” he stressed. At the Military Camp, Erdogan was received by the Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah.
