Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kadhimi has asserted that his government provides services and does not seek electoral competition to achieve political goals. Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting, Kadhimi said that the ministers must remember that they came to serve the people, warning them against exploiting their positions for electoral purposes. “I categorically reject any exploitation of the state's capabilities by the candidates,” warned Kadhimi. A close aide to the Prime Minister denied Kadhimi’s intention to run in the upcoming elections. Nas News website, owned by Mushreq Abbas, Kadhimi’s current advisor, quoted a source as saying that neither the Prime Minister nor any of his aides will run in the polls. The source also indicated that they will not support or favor any political party against another. Kadhimi and his team devoted themselves to serve the Iraqi people in a difficult transitional phase, and their role is to protect the country from political, security, economic, and health challenges. He asserted that the government came as a result of a social crisis and it is not party to the elections, noting that the PM will always be faithful to the people's demands for free and fair polls. Al-Marhala Movement, led by the Prime Minister’s advisers, dropped out of the electoral race on Tuesday. The movement’s leader, Abdul Rahman al-Jubouri, confirmed to local media the move, saying, “We are looking forward to a strong and effective role in supporting independent figures and national currents in the elections.” Kadhimi was named Prime Minister against the backdrop of the October 2019 protests, and his mission was to lead an extremely complex and dangerous phase ahead of the elections. The source said Kadhimi believes that his rejection to run in the elections will likely give him a greater opportunity to be reappointed as Prime Minister.
