Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned on Monday that the current military escalation by the Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen’s northeastern province of Marib may cause a huge humanitarian crisis that will affect hundreds of thousands of Yemenis, especially as nearly a million refugees reside in the region. Aboul Gheit received in Cairo UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths to discuss the latest developments in Yemen and the Houthi offensive in Marib. A credible source at the League said Aboul Gheit was briefed on Griffith's vision and his assessment of the current situation in Yemen. “They both agreed that the first step towards any political settlement is the achievement of an immediate ceasefire throughout the country, in a manner that allows alleviating the grave humanitarian crisis,” the source affirmed. Aboul Gheit told Griffiths that the ongoing Houthi operation in Marib may lead to a major humanitarian crisis that will affect hundreds of thousands of Yemenis, adding that regional-backed international pressure should be exerted on the Houthis to reach a permanent ceasefire. He stressed that preserving a unified and independent Yemen that has full sovereignty over its national soil constitutes the basic starting point for any settlement of the conflict. He refused to turn Yemen into a platform for attacks on Saudi Arabia or that its fate be linked to regional agendas. Griffith’s meeting with the Arab League chief came a day after he sat down with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, who reiterated his country’s stance in support of the Yemeni legitimate government, and state unity, independence and territorial integrity.
