Saudi Arabia has made the greatest progress in the Middle East on the Legatum Prosperity Index 2020. Since 2010, the Kingdom has moved up the rankings table by 12 places. In 2020, it came in 71st place among 167 countries. It performs most strongly in Enterprise Conditions (38) and Social Capital (43) and its biggest improvement compared to a decade ago came in Natural Environment. “In the decade prior to COVID-19, global prosperity had risen continuously, driven by people’s lived experience improving and by more open economies,” read the index report. “People’s lived experience improved due to better education and living conditions across all regions. Health also improved in all regions except for North America,” it said. “Economies had become more open due to improvements to communication and transport infrastructure, strengthened property rights, greater protections for investors and increased access to finance,” it added. “The improvement in social capital also contributed to the increase in global prosperity, but further progress has been held back by governance and personal freedom stagnating,” it noted. The Legatum Institute exists to build a global movement of people committed to creating the pathways from poverty to prosperity and the transformation of society, read a statement on its website. “The Legatum Prosperity Index, now in its 14th year, is designed to be a transformational tool, and our ambition is that leaders around the world use it to help set their agendas for growth and development.” The Legatum Institute is a London-based think-tank with a bold vision to build a global movement of people committed to creating the pathways from poverty to prosperity and the transformation of society.
