Saudi Arabia Signs MoU to Support Yemen’s Agriculture Sector

The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) on Monday signed a MoU with the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to boost the agricultural sector in Yemen. Before signing the memorandum, the Saudi Environment, Water and Agriculture Minister Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli met his Yemeni counterpart, Othman Majali, in Riyadh to discuss the partnership and ways of cooperation between the two ministries through SDRPY. Each of SDRPY Supervisor General Ambassador Mohammad bin Saeed Al Jaber and Yemeni Ambassador Shaya'e bin Mohsen Al-Zindani attended the meeting. The deal is set to contribute to achieving environmental, living and economic balance in war-torn Yemen. It will also help build specialized capabilities in the environmental and agricultural fields, in a way that improves the lives of the people throughout Yemen. “SDRPY is working with the Yemeni Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry to transfer knowledge, build capabilities and support agriculture,” Al Jaber said. “Yemenis depend heavily on agriculture, and we believe that supporting agriculture will pave the way to creating many job opportunities,” he added. “Many aspects of cooperation were discussed in the agriculture and fisheries sectors, and the work will be effective and fruitful.” The officials also discussed joining efforts in combating desert locusts in Yemen, developing solutions to the crises facing the productive and vital sectors, and work to enhance Yemeni agricultural exports. Plans to provide Yemen with planting seeds and fertilizers were also discussed. This partnership is an extension of SDRPY’s efforts to improve the infrastructure of more than seven vital sectors in cooperation with the Yemeni government and local authorities in Yemeni governorates. Support to the agricultural sector will be provided through the delivery of modern equipment, plows and greenhouses, cultivating agricultural lands and managing resources.
