Educational Measures amid Coronavirus Lockdown in Tunisia
Arab World
Tunis - Mongi SaidaniThe number of people infected with the coronavirus in Tunisia is closing on 400, with 10 deaths recorded amid a total lockdown to curb the outbreak. The Education Ministry canceled the sport baccalaureate exams, following a National Security Council decision to extend the lockdown for an additional 15 days from April 5. Education Ministry exam director Omar Ouelbani said Wednesday in a statement to TAP that the Ministry could postpone the dates of national written exams if authorities decided on another extension until after April 20. The resumption of the school year for over two million students is undecided, as the authorities mull several scenarios depending on the duration of the lockdown. The Education Ministry proposed, through a number of specialized educational committees, a set of solutions, including postponing the exams of the sixth and ninth grades and the baccalaureate classes until the summer. This proposal could face stiff rejection from unions. The Ministry stressed the importance of distant learning through virtual platforms. It also called on the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the National Broadcasting Office to help broadcast lessons and educational programs on private and public channels. The Ministry is considering establishing an educational channel to provide support and broadcast lessons during the lockdown.
