Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will hold talks on Thursday with Hussein al-Sheikh, member of the Palestinian Fatah Movement’s Central Committee. This meeting comes in line with revitalizing Russian contacts with Palestinian parties in order to push forward the reconciliation file and expand consultations on developments in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement issue, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of his Mideast peace plan. Meanwhile, Russian sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that a delegation from Hamas, led by the head of its political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, will visit Moscow next week. According to the source, the delegation will hold talks with Lavrov on Monday focusing on the Palestinian-Israeli settlement issue, developments after the announcement of the Deal of the Century, and Palestinian and Arab positions in this regard. He added that both sides will also address means of pushing the Palestinian reconciliation issue forward, pointing to the efforts exerted by Moscow to hold a new round of negotiations among Palestinian factions. Last week, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov held talks in Doha with Haniyeh, during which they both agreed to arrange a visit for the movement’s leadership to Moscow. Moscow had invited Haniyeh to visit Russia last year, but the visit was postponed more than once, and the two parties announced they would continue discussions to arrange a later date.
