Iraq Defense Ministry: Third Party Brought Gas Bombs to Kill Protesters
Arab World
Baghdad - Asharq Al-AwsatThe Iraqi Defense Ministry announced Saturday that it had not imported the gas bombs that security forces are using to quell anti-government protesters. The ministry did not import the bombs that weigh three times the weight of regular bombs, which makes them lethal, it said in a statement. Defense Minister Najah al-Shammari has not signed any purchase or import contract with any country since he assumed his duties, it clarified, according to the German news agency (dpa). A “third party” is responsible for the horrific murder and targeting of protesters and security forces in order to create chaos and strife, it added. The Defense Ministry and minister stand firmly with the protesters and their legitimate demands and their constitutional right to hold demonstrations. The minister is committed to the orders of armed forces commander and Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi in safeguarding the protesters, the statement stressed.
